How Long Does Composite Decking Last?

Expected Lifespan For Your Deck

Whether you’ve recently had a composite deck installed by Charlotte Decks and Porches, or you’re just interested in learning more about composite decking before you invest in a new deck, you’re probably wondering how long your investment will last. Find out now!

How Long Does Composite Decking Last?

Trex DeckingAt Charlotte Decks and Porches, we use TREX composite decking for all of our decks, which has a warranty of 25 years – so at a minimum, you can expect your deck to last this long.

However, third-party tests have shown that composite decking can last even longer than that. Many homeowners with composite decking will be able to keep their deck for 30-50 years or even longer.

In comparison, the average wooden deck has a lifespan of about 15 years – and while natural wood can last longer than this, in some cases, it still requires a lot more care and maintenance.

Composite decking lasts longer because it’s impervious to mold and microorganisms, resists water, doesn’t splinter, and keeps its color more effectively than wood.

How Can I Make My Composite Decking Last Longer?

Composite decking is very durable, but there are still a few ways you can make sure you care for your deck properly and extend its lifespan.

  • Maintain it regularly – Sweep your deck every 1-2 weeks to remove debris, and hose it down with water to remove dust and dirt whenever necessary. We also recommend scrubbing it with a broom and hot water mixed with soap or floor cleaner. Twice-annual scrubbing is a good start, but you may want to scrub more frequently if your deck sees a lot of use.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals – Don’t use acetone or any cleaners with harsh chemicals to clean your decking, or you could strip and damage the protective coating or underlying composite material. A mild soap is all you need to clean your deck!
  • Don’t use salt or sand to deal with ice – Ice & snow are relatively rare in Charlotte, but this still bears mentioning. Salt and sand are abrasive and can damage your deck with repeated use, so avoid using them to deal with ice.
  • Avoid scratches when possible – Composite decking is strong and durable, but can still be scratched by things like dragging around heavy furniture. Try to avoid dragging heavy objects on your deck, and consider adding some felt pads or protectors to the legs of tables & chairs.
